Link juice – what it means and why you want it

Link juice can most broadly be described as the total number and overall clout of the other websites on the internet that link to your domain. Search engines like Google see each of the links that connect another site to yours. The more there are, the more ‘votes’ you have when it comes time for the search engine to rank which result is the most relevant to the searcher. The more link juice your website has, the higher it will rank.

The guys at the Keyword Academy define link juice as “the currency of Google .. the secret sauce that allows you to beat your competitors for rankings in Google. Sure, there are some other factors that Google uses to calculate rankings but link juice is by far the most important aspect of dominating Google..”

The real trick is finding other websites that will link to yours. The bigger the website, the more link juice it provides. A link from the New York times that says you are a reference on Spam recipes is far better than your friends blog – but all votes are counted. If the link to your site is on the homepage of someone’s website it carries additional link juice.

There is a site call Open Site Explorer which can help you analyze how many links your website currently has, and from where they originate. Think about what other sites around the web might link to you. Do you have a supplier that would give you a link? a friend? one of your customers? Most businesses have a few connections that might lead to links – all quite helpful next time Google ranks your website!
